Seal Appeal Appreciation
DONATIONS NEEDED!
SAVE THE SEALS!
Since 1988, the Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary has been protected from December 1st - May 31st. This is the usual time when the local harbor seals give birth to their babies and raise them until they can survive on their own. Unfortunately, the adjacent property owners do not allow public easement across their vacant land. When I tried crossing the property, I was stopped by a security guard. As a result, the only way to cross the property is along the beach where the seals congregate. Seals are skittish and will scatter into the ocean waters when people or dogs approach them. By nature, this is their land and it should be protected accordingly.
There is hope! An organization has been established to help protect this land during the time frame granted by the city. Volunteers monitor the beach to ensure that the public abides by the beach closure. A viewing area is positioned a safe distance from the seals natural habitat.
Why your donation is needed:
Harbor Seals & Trails has been established to raise money to help protect the Carpinteria Harbor Seals all year round. We are in the process of filing for a non-profit status in the State of California. There is a City General Plan for year round closure but it has not been implemented. We will work with legal counsel, local volunteers and the City of Carpinteria to protect the sanctuary. Optimally, we will file a motion to immediately extend the current closure to secure the public easement by right of historic usage. Future plans include the addition of a public restroom, a safer view point and signage to ensure that people do not enter the restricted area. The current view point is barely roped off which presents a danger to young children. The bluff is very steep and one step in the wrong direction could be tragic.
Future Projects:
Harbor Seals & Trails is determined to give back to the general public. Protecting and utilizing good Open Space for public recreational usage is our top agenda. We are currently working on a plan to mark a mountain bike trail from Camarillo to Newbury Park. If we succeed with this endeavor, a hiker or biker will be able to trek along a maintained trail from Camarillo Grove Park to Wildwood Park without crossing any roads.

I discovered this area on Day 84 of my 1000 day adventure. It's amazing how few people know about this place. For other local hiking adventures, please check out my full blog: http://calihike.blogspot.com/

What are we protecting and how will it effect you?
Beyond the Rock: It's a private beach paradise! There are no restrictions nor are we asking the city to limit public usage. If you enlarge this picture you'll notice the stop sign in the far distance marking the boundary for the Seal Sanctuary. Just beyond the next dangerous rock, there is an oil pier limited to the workers of Venoco. Large vehicles cross back and forth on this all day and the public may cross underneath from June 1st to November 30th.
Our main goal is to divert public access beyond this point entirely. Harbor Seals & Trails mission is to seal off, pardon the pun, this section of the beach to protect the seals year round.
Look beyond the pier where the seals congregate. The entire section is less than a quarter mile of beach and it is not in the most desirable location due to the oil pier. The seals don't seem to mind it so let them be!
From the East: A local beachgoer can access the waves and then hike for about two miles until they reach Rincoln. We are just asking for the public to respect the seals and not turn back toward the pier. If people abide by this rule and the city and property owners oblige, the Seal Sanctuary will be protected permanently!
This is the Seal Sanctuary! You will usually find a volunteer here from December 1st - May 31st. The entire section is no more than 20 feet across but it provides excellent views of the seals giving birth to their baby pups. With your donation, we will reinforce this section by making it safer for your children. A thin rope is all that separates you from the bottom of the 75 foot bluff.
THANK YOU!
I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped! Please sign in to follow this blog. At a later date, you may be asked to sign a petition in effort to help demonstrate historic usage of the trails. The problem is that the public has to cross private property to reach the Seal Sanctuary. Venoco, Inc. has been very cooperative with the Sealwatch organization. Sealwatch is made up of Carpinteria City Council Members and other professionals who are passionate about protecting the seals. They do not accept donations but they do appreciate volunteers. I have been communicating with them and conveyed my message that the beach will remain closed entirely! There will be obstacles but I am confident and committed to raise enough money to fund this project.
The Bank of Nevada is the other land owner and they have not objected to the public use either. However, the city of Carpinteria has attempted a year round easement in the past but both companies have seemed to ignore the request. It's possible that if we pursue a 12-month beach closure, the two companies could resist and even fence off the property. This is not a likely scenario but we have to anticipate complications.
There are other Seal Sanctuaries in California. The closest one is La Jolla Harbor Seals in San Diego County. There are local groups that actually want to chase away the seals! Fortunately, there are no such groups opposing the seals in Carpinteria. We may find more difficulty with the California Coastal Commision because we are asking them to take away beach access to the public. In our favor, the portion of the beach that the seals occupy is only accessible during low tide. However, the public does have the right to use this beach from June to November and the city normally takes down the seal signs. --I'll be hiking 1000 trails in 1000 consecutive days to make sure that more signs are added and this rookery is restored to it's natural state!
